Reviews:

“The photography and the settings are adequate but the farcical script never achieves the level of inventiveness required to get away with such a thin plot.” Phil Hardy (editor), The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

“Fletcher struts about in a feather boa and undergoes various costume changes but projects zero in the way of oozing sex appeal. Moreover, at age 46 and of rather broader figure, she is physically wrong for the part. Even with the film being played as the comedy it is, she never seems to get into the spirit of the burlesque.” Richard Scheib, Moria

Buy: Amazon.co.uk

“In places this verged on the amateurish in spite of the professionals before and behind the camera, doing nothing but demonstrate how crucial a decent script is to this kind of effort, which was unavoidably missing with Mama Dracula. If little else it offered a benevolence in its attitudes, though that only meant its teeth were blunted. Surprisingly lush music by Roy Budd.” Graeme Clark, The Spinning Image

“…a relentlessly camped-up embarrassment […] But the puerile result doesn’t have a laugh in it from beginning to end.” Jonathan Rigby, Euro Gothic

“Neither flashes of self-conscious technique nor the presence of Fletcher can raise this film above the level of its sophomoric humor and mediocre plot.” Alain Silver and James Ursini, The Vampire Film

Monster X is a 2017 American supernatural horror anthology film written and directed by Jaysen P. Buterin (Don’t Let the Light In; Beneath the Old Dark House), Daniel B. Iske (Dark Web; Fields of the Dead; The Wretched), Patrick Rea (Arbor Demon aka EnclosureThe Invoking 2Nailbiter) and Sean van Leijenhorst (‘Banshee’ segment). It stars Matt Tatroe, Rich Bentz, Leslie Easterbrook and Chris Lazzaro.

Two friends hide in an old theater to escape ravenous hordes of vampires, zombies and werewolves…

High Fliers Films release Monster X on DVD in the UK on 19 February 2018.

Reviews:

“It’s very low budget so the special effects are mostly practical and basic but not awful at all, they are fun and give the whole thing an 80’s horror movie feel. My favorite shorts were both of Rea’s offerings, the werewolf one because even though the acting was cringey it was quite fun and his vampire movie because it was a little more unexpected than the others and the most original.” Sarah Budd, Horrorscreams Videovault

Monster X is a fun monster flick which gives a twist to some of the classic monsters of the genre. As with most horror anthologies, it has varying degrees of success, but with the movie’s short running times each of the films are direct in their approach, so it moves at a good pace and doesn’t feel drawn out.” Philip Rogers, Nerdly

“The film is admittedly short considering all the things crammed into it although this maybe why Monster X works despite some script issues. It has a fair few gags in it, too. One for horror movie fans to watch for it’s spirit and obvious love of the genre it sometimes pokes fun at, Monster X is a short yet rewarding watch.” James Simpson, Infernal Cinema

Tainted is a 1998 American indie vampire comedy film directed by Brian Evans from a screenplay by Sean Farley. It stars Jason Brouwer, Sean Farley, Greg James, Stacey Murphy, T.J. Timon, and Ronnie Walsh.

A group of video store film geeks, one of whom is a moralistic vampire, are on their way to a midnight movie showing of Blade Runner, when they get sidetracked and stumble onto an unscrupulous vampire’s plot to taint the local hospital’s blood supply with undead hemoglobin…

Reviews:

” …most of the witty repartee is natural and novel (anyone who praises Raising Arizona and the Coen’s as much as the guys in this film do is OK in this critic’s book). But once the film moves into the vampire against vampirism plot, things take a financially strapped production path that grows more and more dissatisfying.” Bill Gibron, DVD Talk

Tainted is quite a nice surprise if you think you’ve exhausted the horror supply of the post-Scream 90s, or if you’re a fan of Kevin Smith’s Clerks, as it’s obvious that the film owes just as much to it as it does any horror film that may have inspired writer Sean Farley…” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

” …one of the problems is that such a simple premise is stretched to 108 minutes. I normally wouldn’t complain, after all the length is stretched out by dialogue, but as I say that dialogue isn’t as well written as it wants to be and the actors, whilst they try their best, quite frankly are not up to the task.” Taliesin Meets the Vampires

“While the movie opens with an exciting and well-orchestrated action sequence, the next half-hour of character development plays like the outtakes from Slackers. Don’t get me wrong, I actually liked the humorous riffs from Slackers. However, this writer simply misfires every joke.” HAL9000-4

Choice dialogue:

Alex: “He’s been an over-critical know-it-all prick all night. And that’s before he had a drop of alcohol.”

Abe’s Tomb aka Abe’s Tomb: The Movie is a 2006 [released 2007] American supernatural vampire horror film written, produced, photographed and directed by Carl R. Merritt (his only credit); it stars Lisa Adore, Bonnie Albertini and Ray Basham.

Moore’s Lake: a small town plagued by feral vampires. The local residents only chance to survive rests on an all-powerful ghoul that long ago vowed to seek vengeance upon the town…

Reviews:

“Jeez, the town of Moore’s Lake would have been safe if there was an English language plague since the “stars” of this flick butchered the poor language effectively. Oh, the beauty of Abe’s Tomb! From the bizarre video game punch sounds to the fight scenes that look like a Self Defense for Epileptics class, Abe’s Tomb is an unheralded disasterpiece! David Hayes, Cinema Head Cheese

“The action is poor with the fights unconvincing and the editing of said scenes jerky at times but, you know what, they had a go. This isn’t brilliant, it isn’t going to set the world alight and it needed (beyond anything else) the story tidying up… big time… but they had a go and you can tell there was some heart in it.” Taliesin Meets the Vampires

“If you ignore the weak acting, mediocre writing, tiny budget, cheap effects, and unoriginal plot, it isn’t all that bad.” The Wild Ghost

“My God this was hilarious! I think The Room, Troll 2 and Birdemic: Shock and Terror all just relinquished their “Worst Movie Ever” awards.” The Great MC, YouTube

‘Death is just the beginning.’

Teeth and Blood is a 2015 supernatural horror film written and directed by Al Franklin and Pamela J. Richardson. It stars Danielle Vega, Glenn Plummer, King Kedar, Michelle Van Der Water and Sean Christopher.

A beautiful diva is murdered on the set of horror director Vincent Augustine’s latest film ‘Chapel Blood’.

Somewhere between the crime scene and the coroner’s van, the body mysteriously disappears. Meanwhile, the city’s supply of donated blood is being dangerously depleted.

Suspecting a connection between the events, detectives Mike Hung and Sasha Colfax go undercover at the studio to investigate. Their attempt to crack the case quickly turns into a desperate battle for survival when they uncover an age-old war between rival vampire covens that threatens to consume humanity…

Reviews:

“This is a film of could have been/should have been. The concepts were there but the acting wasn’t, the playing for laughs seemed off (or maybe it just missed my funny bone), the plotting was loose and it needed something it just didn’t have. A shame.” Taliesin Meets the Vampires

“As far as Plummer’s recent genre fare goes, Teeth and Blood is actually a bit above par, if only because Van Der Water, who surprisingly has never landed a bigger part than Tony Todd’s sister in Minotaur, delivers a performance above the level of the material… plus, she’s purrty.” Black Horror Movies

Evil of Dracula – original title: Chi o suu bara “Bloodsucking Rose” – is a 1974 Japanese supernatural horror film directed by Michio Yamamoto (Lake of Dracula; The Vampire Doll) from a screenplay by Ei Ogawa and Masaru Takesue, based very loosely on Bram Stoker‘s novel Dracula. The Toho production stars Toshio Kurosawa, Mariko Mochizuki, and Kunie Tanaka.

When Professor Shiraki starts his new job at Seimei School for Girls, he is unprepared for the horrors that await him in the classrooms. He arrives to discover the principal’s dead wife kept in the cellar, and his fellow teachers acting oddly towards the pupils.

With help from Shimomura, the school doctor, he begins to piece together the answer to the mystery behind the school and the disappearances there…

  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matt Griffin
  • Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Japanese film expert Jasper Sharp

Reviews:

“Nudity and extra gore are added here including a nasty bit of “facial surgery”. While several elements are revisited from the previous movies, the back story is the most expansive of the two and also adapts ideas straight out of Stoker’s novel. It’s not as accomplished as the previous two entries, but well worth a look for vampire lovers and Japanese cinema aficionados.” Cool Ass Cinema

“The film is a joyously seamless piece of genre entertainment, largely free of the tonal hiccups that made Vampire Doll less so. Yamamoto — along with Manabe and co-writer Ei Ogawa — clearly learned from his experience as the series went on, and his resulting confidence and familiarity with the territory all ends up on the screen to our benefit.” Die, Danger, Die, Die, Kill!

” …the ‘isolated individual in an isolated location’ scenario, the occasionally slightly campy feel, the mix of suspenseful scenes and jolt-inducing ‘boo!’ moments, the vampire’s noticeable pallor, odd moments of unpleasantness, the spooky atmosphere, etc. But the ante is upped somewhat by the employment of a much faster pace and the involvement of more supporting characters.” Lee Broughton, DVD Savant

“There are some interesting touches here; the backstory involving the torture of a Christian (at a time in Japanese history when that faith was not allowed) is unusual, the use of a white rose with sharp thorns (and which turns red at one point) is a good touch, the vampires bite their victims on the breast rather than on the neck, and, this being Japan, there is no use of the usual Christian symbols to ward off vampires.” Dave Sindelar, Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

“In comparison to Lust for a VampireEvil of Dracula is much more sedate. Lust was overflowing with busty teenage girls in a ready state of undress but here Yamamoto has excised almost all suggestion of any sexual element. In this sense, Evil of Dracula comes much closer to the original repressions of Stoker’s Dracula, where the chief vampire, like Dracula, serves to turn the female victims into dangerous forces who are occasionally imbued with sensual interest.” Richard Scheib, Moria

“Even if one doesn’t care to consider whether there’s any symbolic meaning to the story, there are a few visual pleasures to enjoy for their own sake. The trio of schoolgirls that fight each other for the attention of Shiraki, also have the habit of pricking themselves with thorns from a white rose thoughtfully provided by the vampire principal.” Coffee Coffee and More Coffee

“Though it drags a little at first, Evil of Dracula builds to an exciting conclusion and features some genuinely unsettling scenes, both creepy (a hand rising from a coffin behind the oblivious Shiraki) and gory: a face-removal scene (shades of Les yeux sans visage?) which is truly nasty […] The vampire’s eventual demise is also pretty horrific.” MJ Simpson, Cult films and the people who make them

Vampegeddon is a 2009 American vampire horror film directed by Jeffrey Alan Miller from a screenplay by David C. Hayes (Roller Boogie Massacre; Shower of Blood; Blood Orgy of the Damned; et al); it stars Jacqueline Smith, Katherine Von Forelle, and Josh Bingenheimer.

Chased out of the old world, the dark vampire Lord Giovanni flees to the American southwest where he sets up a new brood. Longshank, Britain’s premier vampire slayer follows him here, and in a final confrontation in the Arizona desert, both are killed.

A hundred years later, Melissa, a gorgeous goth lesbian college student, is obsessed with becoming a vampire and escaping her terrible home life.

Along with her four friends, Ted, Liz, Mona, and Kent, she regularly conducts ceremonies where she tries to commune with dark forces. When she buys an old, evil book at a creepy garage sale she finally has the key she has been searching for.

Following her dreams of Giovanni and a map from the book, the friends hike out to “Massacre Lane” and finally summon up some real vampires…

Reviews:

“They tell unfunny jokes (when the vampires don’t show up in the desert, Mel says “this place sucks”) and speak in dubbed speech that sounds like they took turns reciting dialogue into a computer mic, reading it off the page whilst half asleep. There’s also the horrible soundtrack, whether some nu-metal whatever or songs that sound like Lit or Len.” Thomas Duke, Cinema Gonzo

” …the vampires do nothing but hiss continually apart from speaking in some awful Belgianesque accent. The kids are all late 20′s and look older, and for some reason, the women keep getting their oversized jubblies out and believe me this is not a pretty sight.” Andy Deen, UK Horror Scene

The non-special effects are limited to monster make-up that makes the vampires look like Uncle Fester. It comes across as a student film and should’ve never been released to video — yes, the filmmaking is that bad. The only positives are one or two curvy girls and a great underground metal soundtrack by Glendale, Arizona’s Corvus…” Wuchak

Fright Night: The Peter Vincent Chronicles – Issue Zero – is a 24-page original comic book based on a story by screenwriter/director Tom Holland (Fright Night franchise; Rock Paper Dead; Thinner). It focuses on the adventures of Peter Vincent (originally played by Roddy McDowall) immediately following the events of the first film, and serves as a bridge into future Fright Night comic books.

The comic book is written and edited by Ben Meares (Hellraiser: Anthology; Grimm Tales of Terror) and illustrated by Riley Schmitz (Hellraiser: Anthology; Invisible Hands).

“It’s all I could hope for. A great continuation of the original,” said Masters of Horror, and Fright Night’s writer/director Tom Holland. “Roddy would be proud to know his creation was continuing his journey in such high (and bloody) style. Ben Meares’s story is a winner and Riley Schmitz’s artwork captures the Fright Night experience for today’s fans. Onward, with The Peter Vincent Chronicles!”

Fright Night is, for a very good reason, a beloved film within the horror community,” writer and editor Ben Meares said. “I believe a huge contributor to its staying power is the character of Peter Vincent. My goal here was to delve deeper into Peter as a character, and present him with a fresh set of challenges, personal and supernatural, to face off against. Being able to do so with the blessing from the film’s creator is quite simply a dream come true.”

“As a huge fan of the movie I made it my mission to capture its feel in comic book form, while still trying something new,” artist Riley Schmitz said. “I’m thrilled for this project and truly believe fans will enjoy it.”

The deluxe edition has already sold out.

‘The world died. They didn’t’

Red Spring is a 2017 Canadian horror feature film written, produced, directed by and starring Jeff Sinasac. The movie also stars Elysia White, Adam Cronheim and Jonathan Robbins.

Plot:

The world has been ravaged by vampires. A group of survivors band together to search for loved ones who may be alive, dead or something in between, eventually taking shelter in what may be the only safe hideout left to them. However, well defended hideouts have a way of becoming prisons. And prisons aren’t the safest place to be when your friends can turn on you at any time…

Reviews:

Red Spring does occasionally dip toes into familiar tropes just to up the body count, but it never uses it as a crutch. The film manages to build its tension and action slowly, offering a thrilling experience despite the limitations of its budget. A pleasant surprise from beginning to end, and featuring strong performances from its ensemble cast…” Courtney Small, Cinema Axis

“This flick wears its low budget on its sleeve, because its the only choice it has. The make-up here is terrible, its vampires looking more like Party City. Although I can see that it was trying to make a contemporary version of Count Orlok. At least the movie is trying to make vampires scary again.” Paolo Kagaoan, In the Seats

The film’s low budget is quite evident at times and with the exception of the Nosferatu-like lead vampire (Andre Guantanamo), most of the vampires border on cheesy with their grey make-up and dark circles around their eyes. However, despite the film’s limitations, Red Spring still ends up being a solid post-apocalyptic thriller.” Sean Kelly on Movies

“From a technical point of view, the film is well made with some creepy makeup and decent cinematography but they can’t overcome the lack of a good script. And there’s no excuse for this given the fact Sinasac had fourteen years to rewrite and improve it. Instead, Red Spring is a well made but dull film that owes more to Red Dawn than I Am Legend.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony

” …the film does succeed where so many others fail—it’s sad when people die. Is it a touch too long? Yes. Does it deliver a better zombie-type plot than many zombie movies? Also yes. Red Spring’s uncommon approach to the genre is a refreshing change for anyone who’s tired of the same old zombie movie or vampire film or both.” Zombots!

Blood of the Tribades is a 2016 American horror feature film produced, written and directed by Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein (Clickbait; Ten). The Launch Over movie stars Chloé Cunha, Mary Widow, Seth Chatfield, Tymisha ‘Tush’ Harris, Kristofer Jenson, Zach Pidgeon and Sindy Katrotic.

Plot:

Two thousand years after the great vampire Bathor established the village of Bathory, superstition and religious violence take over as the men and women battle for control.

When the men are afflicted with a mysterious illness, they become certain that the vampire women of Bathory are responsible for their ills, and thus, the hunt begins!

Long-forgotten lovers Élisabeth and Fantine find that, with the help of those who were banished, it is their fate to piece together the past and help preserve what little of their society remains before Bathor’s impending return and judgment…

Reviews:

“The lesbian vampire is not new in the realm of horror, but whereas in the past, male filmmakers did their best to make lesbianism seem both erotic as well as the outcast other, this film actually makes these vamps sympathetic and shifts gears to change the subject to male oppression versus judgment upon free-spirited feminine wiles.” Ain’t It Cool News

“Besides the immersive mythology of the piece, the impressive array of locales—many absolutely gorgeous—on display in this film is astounding; especially considering it’s a low-budget independent flick. Also as stated previously, this film seeks to evoke the atmosphere of European arthouse/horror flick hybrids of the 1970s, and it succeeds rather admirably at that.” Famous Monsters of Filmland

“A number of the performances threaten to break the film’s spell but curiously, do seem to add to the air of otherwordly surrealism that permeates. Blood of the Tribades is both a pretty and fun piece of offbeat melodrama…” Scream

“While at first glance Blood of the Tribades may appear to be little more than a meticulously reconstructed and alluringly kitschy Euro-schlock throwback, its themes are as eternal as the undead who populate it, while at the same time being worryingly – perhaps even a little terrifyingly – contemporary..” Starburst

” …everything is based on mood, atmosphere and sensuality, with copious lashings of the red stuff. Rough around the edges but containing some genuinely interesting ideas, such as vampirism as a religion and a provocative treatment of sexuality and feminism, Blood of the Tribades is a fun, cheeky and admirable low budget erotic horror.” UK Horror Scene

“Michael and Sophia have this mentality that they are daring enough to film it, people are daring enough to view it. That mentality for a film like this really adds a depth to the material. Some may view this film as a message of female empowerment and others may view it as excessive. The way they romance the scenery in their film making is intoxicating and yet very creative.” Wicked Channel

Review:

Strippers vs Werewolves falls apart because it doesn’t deliver enough of anything in either quantity or quality – strippers, werewolves, horror and comedy are all under/badly represented here.

Overall, the film was a intriguing concept, however it lacks vital energies, basic technical polish and a sense of fun. A wasted opportunity.

David Flint, HORRORPEDIA

“This low-budget British genre effort has an admirable streak of bloodied sweetness and decent performances going for it, but it’s also, frankly, a bit of a mess, and stronger on montages of characters getting ready for action than the action itself.” Kim Newman, Empire

“… Strippers vs Werewolves is not quite as horrid as it might have been. Director Glendening (fresh off serious werewolf film 13Hrs, aka Night Wolf) manages to make the film look decent on a clearly minuscule budget. However, all the split screen effects in the world cannot disguise a very poor script.” Screenjabber

“If viewed kindly Strippers vs Werewolves isn’t that bad at all. It obviously didn’t cost very much, and while some of the storytelling at the beginning is a little awkward, once it settles down the film is far more watchable than a lot of DVD fare that’s currently available.” This is Horror
